Empowering Children with Facial Differences
Kids Face It provides financial resources for local counseling and learning services to kids who need to face all of the emotional effects of facial differences.
Our vision is to see kids with facial differences have an easier journey to acceptance, greater self-esteem, a healthy life balance and feel empowered to achieve their dreams.
Kids Face It was founded by Andreah. She is a high school student born with Hemifacial Microsomia/Goldenhar Syndrome and Single Sided Deafness. As she went through her medical journey she had great doctors and surgeons but realized she didn't have access to local psychological resources and support close to home at an early enough age.
Andreah began weekly counseling sessions when she was fourteen. These sessions were invaluable helping her understand adversity can be turned into a strength.
Kids Face It offers grants to help children receive licensed professional counseling close to home. Once the surgeries are complete many of the children still have psychological needs. Helping them access professional counseling close to home will help them find a healthy life balance as they transition through their challenges. As we all know, adolescent development is the most challenging stage any child will face. Adding the challenge of a facial difference to this can feel overwhelming.
Providing children with a safe, warm, and supportive environment where they can express their emotions and improve their coping skills. Focus will be on peer and family relationships, self-esteem, and educational development. Through therapy, positive and healthy changes will be implemented. These changes will be focused on the individuals needs while building on their strengths. This will empower children to better achieve academic success and prepare them for adulthood. The therapist will also connect the school professionals and school districts to raise awareness to ensure they understand our children's needs and educate students about accepting our children.
"Even small facial deformities can produce very negative psychological consequences in childhood that can lead to a lifetime of low self-esteem and negative body image... It is more important than ever that schools have a way of confronting staring, comments, questions, ostracism, and bullying.. Without appropriate intervention, it so easily affects vulnerable children's wellbeing and achievement" Frances McGregor
